Subject: Auxiliary Fan - how to repair

Hi folks,

I'm coming again with this aux fan story since this weather triggers a working A/C. I have a 730iA and since I own this car, the aux fan was just running in high rpm (broken resistor) instead of running in low rpm as soon as the A/C is on and then switching to high level once it's gettings hotter under the hood (traffic jam). Since this year, my blower didn't feel like working at all.

The OEM Price of the whole pusher fan assembly is about 400$, so I decided to get that freakin' fan out of my car and try to repair it. It's a german fan being built in Canada - that made my hosting dad quite laughing (is there a little enmity going on??).

You can remove the fan without taking of the front bumper - it's more convenient if the bumper has been removed anyway, but you don't have to. After I got the fan outside (1 hour), I disassembled the whole fan. This is the hardest time, because the fan and especially the fan motor and its enclosure has not been designed to be fixed (rivets all over).

When I finally got the enclosure from the motor seperated, I could see one magnet being falling of its supposed location. It blocked the motor from running and blew my 20A fuse. I took some superglue, glued the magnet back where it has to be and plugged just the motor in again and started the engine with A/C on (fuse replaced) just to see if it works. And it does.

So my today's project is to get the enclosure spot welded for keeping it closed and reassembly everything. Maybe I will change the broken resistor too when I am in a good mood tonight and BMW has that part in stock.

Will report again this week if I got my baby back at work and maybe shoot some pics.

Have a successful start into the new week!!

Uwe
