I found out with an E28 about the splines after battling with the driveshaft for weeks.

Shane is correct about the preload, but I wonder about how the splines are supposed to work. I ended up removing the centre console and having a friend look through it while I was driving the car to find out what was going on, the engine moves back nearly an inch under heavy acceleration and the splines wouldn't absorb that and the shaft went out of centre. The mountings were in good condition.

Problem was solved when I lostened the spline bolt a little.

Maybe it wasn't supposed to work like that, but I was under the impression the splines should move?
