Thanks for the replies.
I ran the self-diagnosis (or, more accurately, tried to), with no results. When I held in the trip reset button (the one on the left, correct?), I got a display of current miles and trip meter. When I turned the key to position 2, I got the various dash indicators, but nothing happened with the mileage display.
(When I tried the same process using the button on the right, nothing at all happened.)
Regarding the "slapping on top of the dash" - that produced no results; the gauges remained pegged on the left pins.
But now ....
The trans gear selector won't move out of park (or out of neutral) if the engine is running. It does move normally if the key is in position 2. (Yes ... I did have my foot on the brake.)
Specifically: I decided to go for a short drive, so I started the car (no problem), but it would not shift out of Park. Turned the engine off, put key in "2" position, shifted to neutral (Yeah! Progress!), and started the engine. Then, it would not move out of neutral, either up or down. So I shut it down.
So ... any relationship between the IP gauge issue and this situation, or just a total coincidence?
