Subject: e39 engine misfire

Hello everyone,

I have a 00 540i with 170k miles on it.

I noticed a month ago it was missing at high speed during acceleration (75mph +) immediately thought it must be the vale cover gasket. My thoughts were confirmed when i visited the mechanic. I had him do the valve cover gasket, change plugs, and other routine maintenance ( new belt, lower power steering pipes, plugs) I was v excited to get the car back and enjoy a serviced engine. To my dismay the engine was now missing at low speed and throwing codes (check engine light) - I got the code read and got p1357 (P1357 Misfire Cylinder 8 With Fuel Cut-off).. did some research and found it may be the coil pack - so I switched around cylinders 5 & 8 to see if the problem followed. It did.. (now got error P1351) alas must be the coil! Easy DIY.. I purchased a new coil (Bremi/STI) and replaced the bad one. Took it on the highway and opened it up a little. All was good for a couple days then the engine started misfiring
(hiccuping, lurching etc) only this time at low speed during acceleration - and I got the check engine light again! How frustrating.. I got it read and once again p1357!!!!
I think it may be the fuel injector in cylinder 8 but am not sure.. I really don't want to keep throwing money at something I am not sure about...

Can anyone give me some insight into this issue...

If it may be the fuel injector does anyone suggest that as a DIY? any useful links for this may be good

Thanks in advance all!

P
