Subject: NSS question

I have an '86 735i with 4hp22e/h and when I go to change the gear selector none of the lights light up except P, the other lights come on when inbetween two gears (so when I put it in gear they go out). When I drive I'm stuck with only first gear. If I put it in 3/2/1 and hold it between 2nd and 3rd so that the 3 lights up and start driving one handed I will drive in 3rd.
I'm know it is the NSS doing this, my question is, how did it get that way? How do I take the NSS off the shifter and does it need to be aligned to the shifter some how when I put it on?

Please help, i'm a student and I need my car fixed in a week, so I can get to my classes.

'86 735i 128k miles
